Chiropractic is health insurance, premiums small, dividends large.

In 1996, Dr. Ian Coulter published an interesting study of the older population in the Journal, "Topics of Clinical Chiropractic”.
 
The key points he noted in this study were:
 
  • 44% of those who used chiropractic care reported having arthritis compared with 66% in the non-chiropractic care group
  • At three years follow-up, less than 5% of those who used chiropractic care lived in a nursing home while a staggering 48% of those who did not use chiropractic care did live in a nursing home
  • At three years follow-up, only 26% of those who used chiropractic care were hospitalized compared with 48% of those in the non-chiropractic group

Chiropractic provides amazing benefits and has an outstanding record of safety and effectiveness. Which is why:

  • “Chiropractic patients were 3 times more satisfied with their care than patients of family practice physicians.” Western Journal of Medicine-1989.
  • Chiropractic has a 90% satisfaction rating. “9 out of 10 chiropractic patients feel their treatment is effective”. The Gallup Organization-1991
 
What does all this mean to the future health of you, your family, and friends? Just asking!

How Does It Work

Chiropractic works by making a physical change in your body. You feel better because you are better! Medications work for the most part by masking the pain signal to your brain. In the latter case you aren’t any better but don’t realize it!

As Lee in the Swiffer commercial says, “I’ve been living in a fool’s paradise”. 

 What difference does it make you ask? Let us say that you slip on a patch of ice and twist your knee. You limp home, take NSAIDs (aspirin,  ibuprofen, naproxen, etc), seem to feel better, so what do you do? You say to yourself, gee I feel better so let me go square dancing. Because  you aren’t really any better what happens? You further injure your knee. What does this mean to you, you ask? An injury that was fixable  now becomes chronic. Ever wonder why joint replacement surgery is so popular? Is there a better way? Just asking!

Pain, Swelling, and Edema

Ever wonder why, after an injury, we are made to suffer pain, swelling, and muscle spasm! Wrath of God, hardly. It’s God’s gift to you. Using the above example: you twist your knee, you feel pain, your knee swells, and your leg muscles go in to spasm.  Why has God been so kind to you as to give you the gifts of pain and swelling after an injury? What is your body telling you?

  • Pain. Don’t move your knee dummy! 
  • Swelling. Don’t move your knee dummy!
  • Muscle spasms. Don’t move your knee dummy!


Each of the above is your body’s attempt to protect the injured area until it heals. So again I ask, should you take pain medications or muscle relaxants to mask the injury or should you do something to help the body heal? Where should you go to get the help you need? Hint: the only profession that doesn’t use NSAIDs or other medications to mask symptoms.

WHY?

Why are we the sickest species on the planet? We have the sickest children, the sickest teenagers, the sickest adults, and the sickest elderly in the history of our species; in the history of any species. Over half of our entire population has a chronic illness, over 80% of our workforce has chronic illness. Chronic illness is responsible for 9 days of absenteeism per employee per year and up to 91 days of lost productivity per employee per year. Chronic illness is the leading cause of death and suffering; 80% of our population is dying and will die from chronic illness. The black plague only killed 30% of the population.

Why have chronic illness rates risen exponentially since 1900 as have prescription drug use and surgery? OUR GENES HAVE NOT CHANGED during this same period so it can’t be the genes!!  IT CAN’T BE GENES. During this period of exponential increase in chronic illness our genes have remained unchanged but our LIFESTYLE HAS CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY! The changes in our lifestyle away from what we genetically require as a species mirror the increases in chronic illness EXACTLY.

Why is the most rapid and significant increases in chronic illness amongst children, teenagers, and middle aged adults if the cause of illness is that we are living longer? Doesn’t make since does it? We are NOT sick because we are living longer - this is bull!

Why is newer diagnostic testing given credit for detecting disease? We are NOT simply detecting more illness by better testing. Obesity alone, which is the causative factor in virtually every other chronic illness, has increased exponentially in just the last decades. Detecting obesity does not require new technology, it only requires a scale!  This is NOT new technology.

The single greatest determinant of whether you will get sick or get and stay well IS YOUR LIFESTYLE CHOICES. This is an INDISPUTABLE FACT.

No drug or surgery will EVER be the wellness and prevention solution for illnesses caused by poor eating habits, or overeating or toxins in food. No drug or surgery will EVER be the wellness and prevention solution for problems caused by sedentary living, poor posture from chronic sitting or traumas, or from chronic repetitive micro-trauma. No drug or surgery will EVER be the wellness and prevention solution for problems caused by lack of self esteem, lack of social connectedness, or lack of positive attitudes, thoughts, emotions, and social relationships.

Which profession closely mirrors what we know about health today? Which profession has preached most of what we know about healthy living for well over 100 years? Chiropractic of course! The other professions are Johnnny-Come-Lately when it comes to healthy living. I have a chiropractic cookbook from 1922. What is the main idea purposed throughout this cookbook? Unprocessed whole foods, natural ingredients, vitamin preservation, etc. No mention of Hamburger Helper. 92 years later others have come to the same conclusions.


Why isn’t chiropractic a regular part of everyone’s wellness program? Just asking.

Symptoms

If we make deposits into our “health checking account” we can make withdrawals as we need them. If you can make deposits (good nutrition, exercise, proper rest, chiropractic adjustments, etc.) then you can make withdrawals (neglect, stress, pepperoni pizza, over doing it, etc.) Like your checking account, if you make more withdrawals than deposits, you get bounced checks and overdraft notices from the bank. Not only are overdrafts expensive, it’s inconvenient and annoying. Sickness and disease are overdrafts on our health checking account. Low back pain and pain down your legs? It’s an “overdraft” your body is sending you. Headaches? A bounced check. Numbness and tingling down your arm? A service charge from your health “bank.” 

 

Many people begin chiropractic care because their health checking account is overdrawn. They’ve got bounced checks and their health bank has levied some rather harsh fees. These penalties serve as a reminder that they haven’t been making adequate deposits to cover their withdrawals. Getting a clear “audit” of your health account balance is the first place to start. That’s the purpose of a thorough examination. Then, you’ll probably need to make some immediate deposits into your account to get yourself out of the red. We call that Relief Care. Then you have a choice. You can neglect your checkbook and suffer a relapse and more service fees later. Or, continue making deposits into your account, building up your balance and giving yourself some breathing room. Think of that as Corrective Care. The smartest option is to continue making still more deposits, opening up a savings account that can serve as a buffer you can call upon in moments of stress. We call that Maintenance or Wellness Care.
